How to communicate as a co-parent

On Behalf of | Jun 28, 2019 | Child Custody

A child custody agreement helps parents raise their children when they do not live in the same home. As much of a help as an agreement can be, it can be very difficult to raise children with the other parent when you struggle to see eye-to-eye or agree on many topics. Today, we will help you learn how to communicate as a co-parent so the relationship is successful.

The most important part of learning how to communicate with the other parent is to avoid fighting in front of the kids. Never fight with the other parent about any topic in front of the kids. This will only hurt the relationship between everyone in the immediate family.

Communicating via email, text and phone is a great way to avoid getting into lengthy arguments. You can use these communication methods to your advantage at all times of the day or night. Make sure your communication with the other parent is clear and concise. Get right to your point so there is no confusion.

It’s never a good idea to put your child in the middle of the relationship between you and the other parent. Do not ask them to relay information, ask the other parent questions or even have them find out things about the other parent for your benefit. This can cause anger, stress, resentment and other issues with the child.

Living in a co-parent situation is not easy. Some parents will be able to make things work, while others will struggle to not fight. Communication is important in any relationship, even a parenting relationship where you do not live with the other parent but still see them often.
