One of the important aspects of co-parenting that divorced parents have to work out is how they will “exchange” their kids when they go from one parent’s home to another. If the parents still live near each other, they will often drop off and pick up from their homes or perhaps from school.
However, what happens when parents live more than a few miles apart? It can be time-consuming and inconvenient to travel this distance, sometimes multiple times a week.
Fortunately, there are apps that let parents find a good spot somewhere in the middle to make the exchange. One is an app called Meetways. It’s not exclusively a co-parenting app. However, it is a good way for parents to find the halfway point (or someplace in between) to exchange their children. They can specify that they’re looking for a restaurant, park, coffee house, toy store or arcade or other type of location.
Making exchanges in locations other than your homes can also minimize the chances that these encounters will devolve into arguments. Most people are less likely to let their tempers get the better of them when they’re in a public place. Moreover, going back to your old home, if you were the one who moved out, can bring up all sorts of negative emotions. So can seeing your ex’s new place, especially if there’s a new significant other living there.
If you’re having issues with custody exchanges that you’re not able to resolve with your co-parent, you may want to consider modifying your parenting plan to include some stipulations about how these exchanges are to be handled. Your Florida family law attorney can help you seek parenting plan modifications or other resolutions that will minimize the stress of these exchanges for your children — and for you.
