Tips for being a co-parent during the school year

Coming to an agreement as co-parents means that you and the other parent have finally agreed on something. Whether you are divorced or were never married to the other parent, the two of you must be on the same page when it comes to your children, especially when school is in session. Today, we will offer some important tips for being a successful co-parent during the school year.

First and foremost, attend every meeting with a teacher as united parents. This is especially important for parent-teacher conferences and any other meeting you are asked to attend for your child. Trying to prevent the other parent from attending the meeting will only make things worse.

Ask the teacher to include the email address for you and the other parent on all communications they send, including ones sent by the school administration. Both parents need to be kept informed about what their child is doing in school.

Never discuss issues with custody, alimony or child support at school. These are private discussions that should only take place when no one else is around or via a private communication stream like a phone call or email.

Create a digital calendar that is shareable with the other parent. You should include all important dates from the school calendar as well as doctor appointments for your child. Make sure the other parent can view and edit this calendar.

Now that you know what it takes to succeed in co-parenting during the school year you can put these tips to good use. Never alienate the other parent, especially in front of your children and always try to attend school events together.
